SURVIVAL BAG

Usually orange, big enough to get yourself and essentials into. Not be used as a sleeping cover, it is  the last line in high visibility insulation.

EMERGENCY WHISTLE

Hardwearing PLASTIC whistle for use in emergency.  DO NOT get uncoated metal - it will freeze to your lips.

PERSONAL MEDICAL SUPPLY (PMS)

Should contain plasters, an antiseptic and bandages, plus any personal medication e.g. insulin if diabetic. Ensure that you pack sufficient medication for 24 hours in case or emergency and you aren't back in time for your next interval.

The following should be in addition to your PMS:

LIP SALVE

The cold will harden and chap you lips. This is   essential to stop your lips cracking. Flavour to taste!

SUN BLOC

The snow reflects sunlight and on a clear day you may get burnt, even though its cold. bloc bare skin (e.g. nose, lip, under eyes)

BLISTER RELIEF

Personal blister relief is a must. "Second Skin" type products are fantastic. you can apply these at target zones before the hike to prevent blisters.

Breaking in your correctly sized boots, wearing the right socks plays a major role in blister prevention

SUGAR SUPPLY

Keep a good supply of sugary snacks, and keep an extra few in your PMS in case of emergency.   Favourites include Kendal mintcake, Snickers, Mars  and bananas (though bananas can freeze!)

SPARE BATTERIES

Keep a supply of  good quality high drain batteries. These are for your camera, and most importantly your torch / lamp.

GLOW STICKS

Get a couple of high quality snap-and-shake glow sticks. Do not buy cheap mini sticks or "clubbing" glow sticks.
