COMPASS

Buy quality - this is the only navigational tool you have on the rock. Silva type 4 is ideal for most mountain hiking experiences

MAP

Ordnance Survey Explorer & LandRanger maps are specifically designed for hikers and climbers.    ALWAYS buy the laminated version: soggy maps are useless - they will get damp / wet.

TORCH / HEAD LAMP

MagLite or equivalent high power beam. A head lamp also allows both hands to be free. remember to get   high drain batteries and always carry spares.

CAMERA

Digital is best, extreme conditions make film tricky to work with. Remember to take extra batteries   (high drain) and a sufficient memory card. Do not use your torch spares when these batteries run out.

WATER BOTTLE / COLD

1Litre is perfect. Plastic or rubber top - cold metal will stick to your lips. Get insulated (a flask jacket) to stop your liquids freezing inside, and your hands sticking to the flask.

WATER BOTTLE / HOT

To hold hot drink, again about 1L Thermos is ideal. As above: don't get metal lipped, but get either rubber gripped / coated or insulated jacket.

Don't be tempted to take too much liquid - it weighs about 1kg a litre

PACK / DAYSAC

It is ESSENTIAL to get a comfortable fit and a modern material pac (don't buy online, go see an assistant at Blacks or Millets, and try a few on).  About 45L will be ideal for a day hike.
