Ultra Violet - Visible techniques use high energy electromagnetic radiation to promote electrons to higher energy orbitals. As orbital energies are quantised, characteristic information about the sample molecules can be inferred. It is so simple yet sensitive that it is found as a detector on many HPLC devices.

This section will detail, to a fair undergraduate level, the concepts and reality of UV-Vis Spectroscopy and its uses in modern organic chemistry. Examples are given to aid the digestion of the subject matter, and a look at real world instrumentation is detailed.
